Small suburb, no straight lines between board and garage

EV Charger Installation in Maidstone

Maidstone packs a lot into a small suburb. Older cottages with ageing wiring, modest original blocks redeveloped into two and three townhouses, and light industrial pockets scattered through it. Highpoint is around the corner and the housing turns over quickly.

The short answer

EV charger installation in Maidstone costs $1,200 to $2,200 for a single phase 7kW unit, or $2,500 to $3,000 plus where three phase is present, which happens more often than expected because of the light industrial pockets near Mitchell Street. Double storey townhouses here rarely offer a straight route between the switchboard and the garage, so the cable route is what separates a good quote from a bad one. A 7.4kW charger adds roughly 40 to 50km of range per hour.

The practical difference between a good and a bad quote here is almost always whether the electrician actually walked the cable route first. In a double storey townhouse there is rarely a straight line between the board and the garage, and the difference between the easy route and the hard one is several hundred dollars.

Double storey townhouses and the cable route

The typical Maidstone townhouse has the garage on the ground floor, living above, and the switchboard somewhere that made sense to the builder rather than to anyone adding a circuit later. Getting from one to the other means finding a cavity, a service riser or a ceiling void that connects them.

Sometimes that route exists and the job is quick. Sometimes it does not, and the honest options are a longer path around the building or surface conduit in a garage where nobody minds. We identify which at the site visit and show you the route before you agree to anything, because discovering it on the day is how quotes turn into arguments.

  • Board in the garage

Best case, and it happens in a reasonable share of newer Maidstone townhouses. A short circuit, half a day, lower end of the range.

  • Board upstairs or in a hallway

The route has to come down. A service riser or a cavity, or surface conduit within the garage where it is not visible from living areas.

  • Board on the opposite side

Longest run and the most variable price. This is the case where a site measurement matters most.

Older cottages and ageing wiring

The remaining older Maidstone cottages regularly still run ageing wiring and boards that need a compliant upgrade before anything else. Small consumer mains, no residual current protection, and circuits that have been extended informally over decades.

Board replacement runs $800 to $3,500 depending on the meter panel and consumer mains. In these houses the cable between the meter and the board is often the real constraint, not the board itself, so we test it rather than assume. Once that is sorted, these cottages usually have a side driveway and a straightforward charger position.

Light industrial pockets and three phase

Maidstone has light industrial pockets threaded through the residential streets, which means some properties have three phase supply where you would not expect it. Former workshops, small factories converted to housing, and properties on the edge of those zones.

Where it is already there, a 22kW capable charger at $2,500 to $3,000 plus becomes a real option. Check what the car accepts first, because many EVs cap onboard AC charging at 7kW or 11kW and will not go faster regardless of the wall unit. A photo of your open meter box tells us which conversation we are having.

What the price actually covers

A compliant EV charger install is a dedicated final subcircuit back to the board, cable sized for a continuous rather than intermittent load, a correctly rated breaker and RCD protection suited to DC leakage under AS/NZS 3000. It cannot share a circuit with power points or lighting.

The job finishes with commissioning at the configured charging current, a check that the unit actually delivers what it claims, and a Certificate of Electrical Safety issued through REC 37223. Our workmanship carries a 12 month guarantee on top of the equipment warranty. Maidstone is twelve kilometres from our Altona workshop and it is a regular working area.

Where the supply is tight, which happens on the older cottages and on townhouses that are already fully electric, a load management device at $200 to $600 lets the charger throttle itself when the house is drawing hard. That is nearly always cheaper and quicker than a supply upgrade, and it removes the risk of tripping the main switch on a winter evening.

Solar is a mixed picture in Maidstone. Townhouse roofs are small and often broken up, so surplus rarely sustains a charger. On the older cottages with a full roof plane and a decent array, a smart charger with a current transformer earns its cost. We configure whichever mode actually suits your roof at commissioning.

On the ground

Maidstone specifics

  • Double storey townhouses here rarely have a straight route between the board and the garage. Walking the route before quoting is the single thing that makes a Maidstone price reliable.
  • Light industrial pockets mean three phase turns up at addresses you would not expect. It costs nothing to check the meter box before assuming a 7.4kW ceiling.
  • Older cottages frequently have undersized consumer mains between the meter and the board. That cable, not the board itself, is often what limits adding a continuous 32A load.
  • Rapid redevelopment means many Maidstone properties are only a few years old with excellent boards, sitting next to houses that have never had a safety switch. The two need very different quotes.

Maidstone questions

It depends entirely on whether a usable route exists between them. A service riser or a connecting cavity makes it a straightforward job. Where nothing connects, the options are a longer path around the building or surface conduit within the garage. That is the difference between the lower and upper end of the $1,200 to $2,200 range, and it needs a site visit to determine.
