The short answer

The electrical work itself in a Footscray terrace is usually straightforward. Getting a circuit from the board at the front of a narrow house to a kitchen at the back, without opening original plaster or touching a wall you share with next door, is the part that takes experience.
Terraces: the route is the job
A typical Footscray terrace has a party wall on one or both sides, a narrow frontage, minimal or no side access, and a rear extension added at some point in the last forty years. There is often no continuous roof space from front to back, because the original roof and the extension roof do not meet in a useful way.
So the first thing we do is walk the route. Sometimes it goes through the roof over the original section and drops at the junction. Sometimes it runs under the floor. Sometimes the honest answer is surface conduit in a discreet position, and we would rather propose that than promise a concealed run and then start cutting into plaster halfway through. Original roof and rear extension frequently do not connect, which is what turns a simple run into a two-stage one.

Where the floor is timber and accessible, it is often the cleanest route in a terrace.
Fuse boxes and circuits that were never earthed
Original fuse boxes are still routine in the unrenovated Footscray terraces, and so are lighting circuits with no earth. That is not a defect of workmanship, it is simply how installations were done when the house was wired. It becomes a live issue as soon as anything modern is connected, because current requirements assume an earth is present and functional.
What that means practically is that a small job, such as adding a power point or replacing light fittings, can uncover a circuit that has to be brought up to standard before the work can be certified. We test rather than assume. Where the wiring is sound, RCD protection at the board is often the answer, at $120 to $300 per device. Where it is not, a partial rewire of that circuit is the honest recommendation.
Apartments and converted warehouses
A large share of Footscray now lives above ground level, and apartments raise questions a standalone house never does. Where does your installation end and the common property begin? Is there a meter room rather than a meter box, and is your board a sub-board fed from it? Does the owners corporation have rules about anything visible or anything on common property?
Converted warehouses add their own quirks: legacy three-phase supply, exposed conduit as an aesthetic rather than a compromise, concrete and brick with no cavity to run cable in, and ceilings you cannot access from above. All of it is workable. It just needs to be established before quoting, which is why we do not price apartment work over the phone.
Common property
Work outside your lot boundary needs owners corporation approval, and it is better to get that first than to be stopped on the day.

Solid construction
Concrete slabs and brick without cavities mean surface conduit or ceiling drops rather than concealed cable.
Solar on a small, steep, shaded roof
Footscray roofs are the least generous we work with. Terrace roofs are small, steep and frequently overshadowed by a neighbouring two-storey building or a mature street tree. The usable panel area is often a fraction of the roof footprint.
That does not always rule solar out. Rear extensions with a flat or skillion roof sometimes provide the only genuinely useful plane, and a smaller, well-designed system that covers daytime consumption can still be worth doing. A 6.6kW system is $4,500 to $8,500 before STCs and roughly $3,000 to $6,000 after, but on many Footscray terraces the roof will support less than that and we will say so rather than sell panels facing east into a wall.
Charging a car where there is no driveway
Plenty of Footscray homes park on the street or in a rear laneway. A wall charger only makes sense where the car reliably sits on your own property, so the first question we ask is where you actually park, not which charger you want.
Where there is a rear garage or off-street space, a single-phase 7kW charger is $1,200 to $2,200 installed, and in a terrace the run from a front-of-house board to the rear is what pushes it up that range. Usually, but the route decides it. Where there is accessible roof space or a timber subfloor, the cable can be fished and the outlet cut in with a hole saw, leaving no patching. Where the wall is solid brick or shared with next door, the options are a different position, a run from the other side, or discreet surface conduit. We work that out before quoting rather than mid-job.
Work inside your own lot is generally yours to organise. Anything on common property, including cabling through shared risers, equipment on external walls or work in the meter room, needs owners corporation involvement. We identify which side of that line your job falls on at the site visit, because starting work that later needs approval helps nobody.
It depends on what is connected. Unearthed lighting circuits were normal when many Footscray terraces were wired, and with old fittings they functioned as intended. The risk rises when metal fittings, downlights or anything with an exposed conductive part is connected. Any new or altered circuit has to comply with current requirements, so an earth has to be provided rather than worked around.
Sometimes, and less often than in the outer west. Terrace roofs are small, steep and frequently overshadowed by neighbouring buildings or street trees. Where a rear extension provides a decent plane, a modest system sized to daytime consumption can pay off.
