Altona Meadows was built as estate housing through the 1980s and 1990s, and that single fact explains most of the work we do here. The homes are large, single-storey and sit on wide blocks with double garages. The roofs are big and mostly unshaded. The switchboards are old enough to be missing protection that is now standard, and young enough that people assume they are fine.

So the two jobs that come up most often in the Meadows are at opposite ends of the scale: a modest RCD retrofit that makes the existing installation safe, and a large solar array that the roof is genuinely well suited to. They are frequently the same customer, and doing them in that order saves money.
The 1980s and 1990s board problem
Boards from this era usually have circuit breakers, which is why people assume they are modern. Breakers protect the cable from overload. They do nothing to protect a person from a shock. What is often missing is RCD protection on every final subcircuit, which is what current AS/NZS 3000 requires for new work.
That gap surfaces the moment you add anything. A new circuit for an air conditioner, a charger or a solar inverter has to comply with today’s rules, so the board has to be able to provide the protection. Adding RCDs to a sound board runs $120 to $300 per device. Where the enclosure is full or the panel is past it, a full replacement lands somewhere in the $800 to $3,500 range.
Breakers are not safety switches
If pressing a test button on your board does nothing because there is no test button, you have no RCD protection.

Why Meadows roofs are worth more than most
Large single-storey tiled roofs with clear north and west faces are exactly what a solar designer wants. There are few dormers, few valleys, and on most streets no significant shading. That means long unbroken panel runs, fewer awkward orientations and a system that performs close to its modelled output.
A 6.6kW system runs $4,500 to $8,500 before STCs and roughly $3,000 to $6,000 after. In the Meadows the more interesting conversation is often about going larger, because the roof will genuinely carry a 10kW-plus array where a Footscray terrace could never fit one. West-facing capacity is worth having here too, because it generates into the late afternoon when the ducted cooling is running.
Cable runs are what an EV charger costs here
Meadows blocks are wide, and the garage is often at the end of a long driveway or detached at the rear. The meter box, meanwhile, is usually near the front boundary. The distance between those two points is the single biggest variable in an EV charger quote in this suburb.
A single-phase 7kW charger with the board a few metres away is $1,200 to $1,700. The same charger with a long run, a detached garage or underground conduit pushes toward $2,200, and a three-phase unit is $2,500 to $3,000 or more. We measure the run and check the route on site before quoting, because on a Meadows block a guess can be out by a long way.

A separate structure may need its own submain and a small distribution board rather than an extension of a house circuit.

Underground conduit is priced by the metre and by what has to be crossed, so a paved driveway costs more than lawn.
Run it once
If a second EV is likely, sizing the cable up now is much cheaper than doing the whole run twice.
Coastal enough to matter
The Meadows is not a beachfront suburb, but Cherry Lake and the bay are close and the sea breeze reaches well inland along Boardwalk Boulevard and toward Skeleton Creek. Outdoor equipment here still needs coastal-rated fixings and enclosures.
Where it shows up most is on air conditioning condensers, outdoor isolators and rooftop solar mounting hardware. Panel rails and clamps live on a roof for twenty-five years, so the fixing specification matters more than almost anything else on a solar quote. We use hardware rated for the exposure rather than the cheapest compliant option.
Heating, cooling and hot water on a big floorplan
Large single-storey Meadows homes suit ducted systems better than a collection of splits, because the roof space is accessible and the floorplan is spread out. Where a single living zone is the problem, a split system installed runs $2,500 to $7,500 depending on capacity and how far the indoor and outdoor units sit apart.
Hot water is the other common upgrade. A heat pump changeover is $3,000 to $4,500 before incentives and uses roughly a third of the electricity of a conventional electric storage unit, which pairs well with a large solar array running the heat pump in the middle of the day. If the board also needs work, doing all of it in one planned package is cheaper than three separate visits.

Yes. This is the most common misunderstanding we deal with in Altona Meadows. A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload and fire. An RCD, or safety switch, compares the current going out with the current coming back and cuts supply in about 30 milliseconds if the difference suggests electricity is flowing through a person. For anything outdoors, yes. Altona Meadows sits close enough to the bay and to Cherry Lake that salt reaches it on a sea breeze. We see it on condenser fins, isolator enclosures and cheap outdoor fittings. Solar mounting hardware is the one we are strictest about, because it has to survive twenty-five years on a roof and replacing it later means taking the array off.
