Two halves of a suburb, and one very corrosive atmosphere
EV Charger Installation in Ocean Grove
Ocean Grove has two distinct halves. The 1887 grid south of Thacker Street is modest 1950s to 1970s holiday cottages, heavily rebuilt and extended, on regular blocks of 600 to 750 square metres with usable side access and mature canopy. The north east growth area is dense estate housing planned with minimal side clearance.

The short answer
EV charger installation in Ocean Grove 3226 costs $1,200 to $2,200 on single phase, with marine-grade fixings and sealed enclosures as a baseline rather than an upgrade because the suburb sits on a Bass Strait surf beach. Powercor is the distributor. About one dwelling in five sat empty on census night, so access is arranged rather than assumed. The 1887 grid south of Thacker Street gives 600 to 750 square metre blocks with usable side access.

They need different specifications and we quote them differently. What both halves share is a genuinely corrosive atmosphere, because this is a Bass Strait surf beach rather than a sheltered bay, and a meaningful holiday-home share that makes access something to arrange rather than assume.
Marine-grade is the baseline, not an upgrade
Close to a surf beach on Bass Strait, salt-grade fixings, marine-rated enclosures and stainless mounting hardware are not optional here the way they might be inland. The sealed charger itself copes. What fails is the isolator beside it, the gland plates and the mounting fixings, and it fails years earlier than it would in Grovedale.
We specify it that way as standard rather than as a line you can decline. The practical difference on the day is a few dollars in fixings and a slightly more considered mounting position, and the difference in year eight is whether the installation is still solid or whether the bracket has bled rust down the wall.
Stainless fixings only
The plated screws in the charger box are not adequate this close to open ocean salt.
Coastal rated glands
Where cable enters the enclosure is the most common failure point on a coastal installation.
Position out of the weather
Inside a garage or under an eave, on an elevation that is not taking the prevailing salt-laden wind.
The old grid, the canopy and where the car parks
The 1887 grid south of Thacker Street gives regular blocks of roughly 600 to 750 square metres with usable side access, which makes cable runs to a rear garage or carport straightforward. The complication in these streets is the retained Moonah and Bellarine Yellow Gum canopy.
For solar that canopy is a real shading problem. For a charger it is a mounting and routing problem instead, because a cable run has to avoid roots on an underground crossing and branches on an overhead one, and a protected tree is not something to work around casually. We walk the route rather than draw it from an aerial photo.
Usable side access
The old grid blocks take an external conduit run, which is the cheap way to reach a rear garage.
Protected canopy
Moonah and Yellow Gum in these streets constrain trenching routes and overhead runs alike.
Route walked on site
Roots and branches do not show up on an aerial photo, and they decide the route here.
The north east growth area is a different job
The north east growth area was planned at higher density with minimal side clearance, so the generous access that defines the old grid is simply not there. What you get instead is a modern board, usually close to an attached garage, and a car that parks a few metres from it.
Those are among the cheapest installs on the peninsula and they carry no board line at all. The salt specification still applies, but a charger mounted inside an attached garage is far better protected than one on an exposed wall in the old streets, which takes most of the corrosion question off the table.
Modern board close by
Short run, no replacement needed, and a job at the lower end of $1,200 to $2,200.
Minimal side clearance
Not a problem when the board and the garage are on the same wall, which is the usual arrangement.
Inside the garage
The best position available in this suburb for corrosion, and it costs nothing to choose it.
Holiday homes and getting into the property
About one dwelling in five sat empty on census night, so a meaningful share of homes here are holiday properties owned by people who are not local. That has to be planned rather than assumed, because a charger installation needs someone to open the house, not just the garage.
We arrange access explicitly at the quote stage. Where the owner is not local, that usually means a nominated week, a key arrangement and a commissioning handover done remotely with photographs and the configured settings written down. It works, but it works because it is organised in advance rather than on the morning.
Access arranged at quote
A nominated week and a key arrangement, agreed before the job is booked into a Bellarine block.
Remote handover
Commissioning settings and photographs supplied where the owner cannot be present.
Tenanted holiday lets
Where a property is let, the owner still has to consent in writing to a permanent installation.
Single phase, scheduling and what the install includes
Ocean Grove streets are single phase on the Powercor network, so 32A and about 7.4kW is the ceiling, which is 40 to 50km of range per hour. For a holiday property that sits for weeks between visits, that is more than enough, and a phase conversion out here would be a remarkable waste of money.
Ocean Grove is about 85km from our Altona base, which makes it the furthest point we cover. We book it in scheduled Bellarine blocks and nominate the week rather than the hour, and we do not offer same-day attendance or emergency response here because we could not deliver it.
32A single phase
About 7.4kW and 40 to 50km of range per hour, which is ample for any use pattern here.

Ocean Grove questions
Yes, and more than anywhere except Torquay. This is a Bass Strait surf beach, not a sheltered bay. The sealed charger copes, but the isolator beside it, the gland plates and the mounting fixings fail years earlier than they would inland. Stainless fixings, coastal rated glands and marine-rated enclosures are our baseline here rather than an upgrade you can decline.
We arrange it explicitly at the quote stage, because about one dwelling in five here sat empty on census night and we cannot assume anyone will be there. That usually means a nominated week, a key arrangement, and a commissioning handover done with photographs and written settings if you cannot be present. It works when it is organised in advance.
It shapes it rather than blocks it. The retained Moonah and Bellarine Yellow Gum canopy in the older streets means roots constrain a trenching route and branches constrain an overhead one, and a protected tree is not something to work around casually. We walk the route on site rather than drawing it from an aerial photo.
Usually, yes. Those homes were planned at higher density with minimal side clearance, but the board is modern and typically close to an attached garage, so the run is short and there is no board replacement line. Mounting inside the garage also gives the best corrosion protection available in this suburb, at no extra cost.
No. Ocean Grove streets are single phase Powercor supply and a conversion means distributor work, new consumer mains and a new board. A 7.4kW single phase charger gives 40 to 50km of range per hour, and on a property that often sits for weeks between visits there is no scenario where faster charging is worth that spend.
About 85km from Altona, which makes it the furthest point we cover. We book work here in scheduled Bellarine blocks and nominate the week rather than pretending to same-day attendance. Powercor runs the network here as it does in our own area, so the connection and load addition process is entirely familiar to us.
