Why reverse cycle costs so much less to run
A gas heater burns fuel and converts 80 to 92 percent of it into heat. That is the ceiling. No burner, however well made, can produce more energy than the fuel contains.
A reverse cycle system does something different. It does not make heat, it moves it, collecting warmth from the outside air and delivering it indoors. That is why it returns 3 to 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity it consumes. The gap between a ceiling of 0.92 and a return of 3 to 4 is the entire reason the running costs differ so much.

What a changeover costs, and where the discount comes from

The house matters as much as the heater
Putting an efficient heater into a leaky house is like filling a bath with the plug out. Two things dominate heat loss in Melbourne homes, and both are cheaper to fix than the heater is to replace.

The thermostat setting people get wrong

Running it at 19 or 20 during the hours you are home generally beats switching it off and reheating the house from scratch each evening.
Timing, and why June to August is the wrong time to plan
Peak heating season runs June to August, and that is exactly when every heating contractor in Melbourne is booked out and every heater in the city decides to fail. It is the worst time to be making a considered decision about a replacement system.
The better approach is to assess in autumn. A sensible order to do it in

Adjust the thermostat habit throughout, because it costs nothing and it is the only item on this list that takes effect the same evening.
The smaller savings that add up
Once the heater, the draughts and the thermostat are dealt with, the remaining winter savings are individually modest but collectively worth having.
Heat the rooms you are in. Closing internal doors is free zoning, and on a ducted system a properly set up zone controller does the same thing automatically. Heating a hallway and three empty bedrooms costs the same per hour as heating the room the family is actually sitting in.
Use the curtains. Heavy curtains that reach the floor and are sealed at the top with a pelmet stop the convection loop that pulls warm air down a cold pane and along the floor. Open them on a sunny winter afternoon to let free heat in, and close them before dusk to keep it.
Check the filters. A blocked filter on a split system or a ducted unit makes the fan work harder to move less air, which shows up as poor performance that people mistake for an undersized system.
