A ceiling fan installation is three separable things: the fan, the electrical work to get power and switching to it, and the mechanical work of fixing a spinning object safely to a ceiling. Quotes are easier to compare once you know which of the three each number includes.
Labour alone, on an existing ceiling point with existing switching, is $150 to $350. That covers removing the old fitting, checking the mounting, fixing the new bracket, connecting and balancing the fan and testing it. The range reflects ceiling height, how well the existing mount was done, and whether the fan is a simple three blade unit or one with a remote receiver and a light module.

The mechanical part is the one people underrate. A fan is a rotating mass hanging above a bed. It has to be fixed to a structural member or a proper fan brace, not to a plasterboard sheet. If the existing mount is not adequate, providing one is part of the job.

Replacing a fan versus creating a new point
These are two different jobs that share a name, and the difference is roughly double.
Replacing an existing fan is the simple case. The cable is there, the switching is there, and there is usually a mount that can be reused or upgraded easily. It is a short visit, and the ideal thing to bundle with other work while an electrician is already on site.
Creating a new point means cable has to be run from an existing circuit or the switchboard, through the ceiling space, to a position that has never had a fitting. Then a switch wire has to reach a wall switch, or a remote receiver has to be fitted. Indicatively $350 to $700 depending on access above the ceiling and whether a wall has to be chased.
Access decides the number. A single storey house with a walkable roof space above the room is straightforward. A ground floor room under a second storey, or a cathedral ceiling with no space above it, is a different job, and there a remote controlled fan often avoids the switch wire problem for less than the cost of solving it.
With a light, and without
Fans divide into three arrangements and each one prices differently. A fan without a light is the simplest, and it is the right choice in a room that already has good lighting. No light module, no extra switching, no compromise on light output to fit it into a fan body.
A fan with an integrated light replacing a central light fitting is the common case, and it raises the switching question. If the existing point has only one switch wire, the fan and the light cannot be controlled separately from the wall without running a second one, an indicative $120 to $300 depending on how far the switch is and what the wall is made of. A remote or app controlled fan separates the functions without any extra cabling.
The third arrangement is a fan added alongside an existing light rather than replacing it. That is usually the new point case, with the fan central and the lights repositioned around it. It looks better and it costs more, because you are paying for the fan point and a lighting alteration.

AC fans use the traditional motor design. They are cheaper to buy, usually have three speeds, and are controlled by a wall speed controller. They still make sense in a spare room or a rental where up front cost matters most.
DC fans use a direct current motor with an electronic controller. They draw considerably less power, run noticeably quieter, offer more speed steps and almost always include a remote and a winter reverse function. They cost more, which is the entire trade. In a bedroom, where noise at low speed is what you notice, the difference is worth paying for. In a garage it is not.
That winter reverse is genuinely useful in Melbourne. Run slowly in reverse, a fan pushes warm air collected at the ceiling back into the room, so a heated space feels warmer at the same thermostat setting. In a high ceilinged room with a split system, that is a real saving for very little energy.
Outdoor fans are a separate category rather than an indoor fan in a sheltered spot. How to compare ceiling fan quotes fairly
The main thing to establish is whether a price is labour only or supply and install, because $250 and $600 can describe the same visit with a different fan attached to it. Ask for the fan make, model and blade span alongside the labour figure.
The second is the mounting. A quote that assumes an existing point is adequate, when it is a plasterboard fixed light point, will change on the day. The third is switching: confirm whether independent fan and light control is included or whether one switch does both.
