One of the few western suburbs where 22kW is realistic

EV Charger Installation in Laverton

Laverton is a genuine mix and the EV work reflects it. Older post war housing on standard blocks, newer compact estate lots, and a substantial industrial fringe where three phase supply is normal rather than exotic. We do residential chargers and warehouse and fleet charging here in the same week.

The short answer

EV charger installation in Laverton costs $1,200 to $2,200 for a single phase 7kW unit, or $2,500 to $3,000 plus for a three phase 22kW capable install. Laverton is one of the few suburbs in the west where three phase supply is genuinely available at residential and small commercial addresses, because of the industrial zoning around Aviation Road and the RAAF Williams precinct. Older Laverton housing frequently needs a board replaced first, at $800 to $2,500.

That industrial zoning is the interesting part for anyone buying an EV. In most of the west, asking about 22kW charging means asking about a supply upgrade that will not pay for itself. In parts of Laverton, it means checking the meter box, because the three phases may already be there.

Why three phase is actually on the table here

The distribution network through Laverton carries three phase into far more addresses than a typical residential suburb, because the industrial and light industrial sites around Aviation Road and the rail corridor need it. Properties on the fringe of those zones, older houses that once had a workshop, and small commercial premises frequently have all three phases at the meter.

If you have it, a 22kW capable charger at $2,500 to $3,000 plus becomes a sensible purchase rather than an indulgence. Before spending it, check what your car will accept. Plenty of EVs cap onboard AC charging at 7kW or 11kW no matter what the wall unit can supply, in which case the extra outlay buys you nothing today, though it may suit the next car.

  • Check the meter box

Three incoming actives and a three pole main switch means three phase. A photo of the open box tells us before we visit.

  • Check the car

Onboard AC charger ratings vary from 7kW to 22kW. The wall unit cannot exceed what the vehicle accepts.

  • Check the board

Three phase at the meter is not the same as three phase capacity at the board. Both get assessed at the quote.

The older housing stock and outright board replacement

Laverton is one of the most common places we replace a switchboard outright rather than modify it. The older post war stock here often has boards that have been added to repeatedly, with a mix of rewireable fuses, early breakers and no residual current protection worth the name.

When a board is in that state, patching in one more circuit for a car is poor value. A full replacement at $800 to $3,500 gives you correct protection on every circuit, a main switch with headroom, proper labelling and a tested earth, and it makes the charger install itself quick and cheap. We quote the two separately so the split is obvious.

Fleet, workplace and warehouse charging

The industrial side of Laverton brings a different job. Small fleets replacing utes and vans with electric equivalents, warehouses adding a few bays for staff, and businesses that want charging metered and billed separately from the site supply.

Those installs are load management exercises more than anything else. Multiple chargers sharing a site supply need dynamic load sharing so the site does not exceed its demand limit at shift change. We do that work alongside the residential side, which is one reason we are comfortable with three phase design in a suburb where most contractors only ever see single phase.

Newer estate lots and the compact block problem

The newer parts of Laverton follow the pattern we see across the growth corridor. Compact lots, single or tandem garages, modern compliant boards and short cable runs. Those jobs are usually a straightforward half day at the lower end of the price range.

The thing to watch on compact lots is where the charger physically fits. A tandem garage with a car in each space, a shelf along one wall and a hot water unit on the other does not leave many mounting positions at a sensible height. We work that out on site so the unit ends up somewhere you can actually reach with a lead in the dark.

Laverton also sits close enough to the bay and Cherry Lake that outdoor mounted units on exposed walls see some salt, though nothing like Seaholme. Where the charger goes inside a garage, which is most of these estate installs, it is not a consideration at all. Where it goes on an external wall, we use stainless fixings as a matter of course.

Laverton specifics

  • Three phase supply is genuinely more available in Laverton than in most residential suburbs, because of the industrial zoning. It is the one suburb where we routinely ask people to photograph the meter box before quoting.
  • Older Laverton boards are among the most likely in the west to warrant outright replacement rather than modification, because they have usually been added to several times already.
  • The industrial fringe means we quote fleet and workplace charging with dynamic load sharing here as often as we quote single home chargers, so multi charger design is familiar rather than unusual.
  • Newer estate lots have tandem or single garages where mounting position matters. Getting the unit at a usable height with the lead reaching the right car takes five minutes of planning and saves years of annoyance.

Laverton questions

Open the meter box and look at the incoming supply. Three separate active conductors and a main switch with three poles ganged together means three phase. One active and a single or double pole switch means single phase. Send us a photo and we will tell you before booking a visit, because it changes the quote from around $1,500 to around $2,800.
