On these blocks, the tape measure sets the price
EV Charger Installation in Altona Meadows
Altona Meadows is estate housing from the 1980s and 1990s on wide blocks, and that geometry decides the EV charger quote before we look at anything else. The meter box is on the front corner of the house. The double garage, attached or detached, is at the other end of the frontage or down the side. There is a long way between them.

The short answer
EV charger installation in Altona Meadows typically costs $1,200 to $2,200 for a single phase 7kW unit, with the cable run from meter box to garage the biggest variable. Estate homes here sit on wide blocks with double garages, so runs of 15 to 25 metres are normal and push most jobs toward the upper end. A 7.4kW charger adds roughly 40 to 50km of range per hour. RCD retrofits on 1980s and 1990s boards add cost.

That is not a problem, it is just a measurement. But it is the reason a quote given over the phone for a Meadows address is worthless, and the reason our number lands after someone has walked the route with a tape.
Why the cable run matters more here than anywhere
A charger drawing 32A continuously is a different animal to a lighting circuit. Over a long run, voltage drop has to stay inside the limits in AS/NZS 3000, and the fix for a long run is a bigger cable. On a fifteen metre run we might use one size. On a twenty five metre run around the back of a detached garage, we go up a size, and the cable itself becomes a real line on the invoice.
The good news is that Meadows blocks almost always have a clean route. Cavity brick with accessible roof space, eaves the whole way, and a side path that is not built out. We can usually get from board to garage without cutting a single finished wall, which is not true in Footscray or Yarraville.
Attached double garage
Usually a roof space run from the board across to the garage wall. Tidy, quick and at the lower end of the price range.
Detached garage or rear shed
A submain in conduit, either along the fence or underground. Priced per metre plus the reinstatement of whatever we cross.
Front driveway parking
Cheapest of all if the car actually parks there. Charger goes near the meter box and the lead reaches the bonnet.
What 1980s and 1990s boards typically need
Boards of this vintage usually have miniature circuit breakers rather than rewireable fuses, which is a good start. What they often do not have is RCD protection on every final subcircuit. Adding a new EV circuit means that circuit gets RCD protection with the correct DC leakage detection, and it is normally the right moment to bring the rest of the board up to current standard.
The other check is spare capacity. A lot of Meadows homes already run a ducted system, an electric oven and a pool or spa pump. Adding 32A of continuous load on top can push the demand past what the main switch and consumer mains were sized for. Where it does, a load management device at $200 to $600 is far cheaper than a supply upgrade.
You probably already have solar, and that changes the setup
Altona Meadows has some of the best solar roof space in the west. Large single storey tiled roofs, mostly unshaded, with good north and west faces. A lot of homes here already carry 6.6kW or 10kW arrays, and that makes a smart charger worth the extra few hundred dollars.
With a current transformer on the main supply, the charger tracks house consumption and export and puts only surplus solar into the car. On a clear day that turns exported kilowatt hours worth a few cents into kilometres you would otherwise buy. It is stop start and it needs the car to be home in daylight, so most people run solar mode on weekends and off peak scheduling on weeknights.
Coastal exposure, even a few streets back
The Meadows is close enough to the bay and to Skeleton Creek that salt reaches outdoor equipment. It is less aggressive than Seaholme or the Altona foreshore, but it is real. Chargers mounted on an exposed western garage wall with no eave over them get weathered hard.
We use stainless fixings, coastal rated glands and, where there is a choice, a mounting position under an eave or inside the garage with the lead run out. An indoor mounted charger in an attached garage is the longest lasting arrangement available and it costs nothing extra to choose it.
The same logic applies to the isolator that sits alongside the charger. It is a smaller and cheaper item than the charger itself, and in a bayside suburb it is usually the first thing to show corrosion. Specifying a properly rated enclosure at install time costs a few dollars and saves a callout in year six.
On the ground
Altona Meadows specifics
- Meter box to garage runs of 15 to 25 metres are normal on these blocks. That distance decides both the cable size and the price, so any quote given without a site measurement is a guess.
- 1980s and 1990s boards here commonly have breakers but no RCD on every final subcircuit. The new EV circuit needs correct RCD protection regardless, and it is the sensible moment to fix the rest.
- Large unshaded roofs mean a high proportion of Meadows homes already have solar. A smart charger with export tracking is worth the extra spend here more than in the shaded inner west.
- Homes closer to Boardwalk Boulevard and the Skeleton Creek end take more salt than those inland toward Central Square. We spec stainless fixings on that side by default.

Altona Meadows questions
It depends on the route and the surface. An overhead run in conduit along a fence line is the cheaper option. Underground conduit to a detached garage typically runs $60 to $120 per metre once you count trenching, conduit, backfill and reinstatement, and it goes up if we are cutting through a concrete driveway rather than crossing lawn. We measure and price it as its own line.
On a Meadows roof, usually yes. With that much array and typical daytime household use, there is often 3 to 4kW of surplus available in the middle of a clear day. A smart charger with a current transformer diverts that into the car instead of exporting it. The catch is the car has to be home. If it is at work every weekday, set solar mode for weekends and use an off peak schedule overnight.
It should not, and if there is any doubt we fit load management rather than hoping. A 32A charger is roughly the same continuous draw as a large ducted system. Where the house already has ducted, an electric oven and a pool pump, we install a device that monitors total demand and throttles the charger automatically. It costs $200 to $600 and it is far cheaper than a supply upgrade.
Rarely in the residential estates. The Meadows sits on the Powercor network and the estate housing was built single phase. Three phase is far more likely in the light industrial areas of Laverton and Altona North. Unless you already have three phase at the meter, a 7.4kW single phase charger giving 40 to 50km of range per hour is the sensible ceiling here.
A single phase charger on an attached garage wall with a roof space cable route is three to four hours. Add a detached garage submain, a board upgrade or trenching and it becomes a full day, occasionally two visits. Your power is off for part of the day while we work in the board, usually under an hour, and we tell you when before we start.
