Heat Pump Hot Water Systems in Lara

Lara is a 1960s to 1980s brick veneer township core wrapped in large 1990s to 2020s estate subdivisions, with a small pocket of 19th century buildings near the railway. Those two halves need different quotes. An older township lot of 700 to 1,000 square metres with driveway access to the rear is a genuinely easy install. The short answer

The thing both halves share is exposure. Lara sits on a flat treeless basalt plain, which is excellent for solar because there is almost no shading, and it means real wind. For roof-mounted equipment that is a structural design input. For a heat pump it is a placement decision, because a unit on an exposed corner has cold air driven through the coil all winter.

Two lot types, two different jobs

On the older township blocks the changeover is about as easy as it gets in this region. Seven hundred to a thousand square metres with real driveway access to the rear means the old tank comes out on a trolley, the new unit goes to whichever position suits it best, and the cable run is short because the meter box is usually on an accessible side wall.

On the newer estate lots of 400 to 600 square metres the side path is narrow and the usable positions reduce to one or two. A heat pump is bulkier than the gas unit most estate houses were built with, so we measure the path and the pinch point before specifying, and we price the rear yard alternative where the side path would leave the unit breathing its own cold discharge.

Wind off the basalt plain

Lara sits on an exposed flat plain, so wind loading is a real design input rather than a formality on anything mounted up high. A heat pump lives at ground level, so the concern is different: a unit on the exposed western or northern corner of a block has cold air driven across the coil continuously through winter, which is not the same as having air drawn through it by its own fan.

We put the unit on the sheltered side where the block allows, ideally with a fence line or the house itself breaking the prevailing wind, and with the discharge into open space rather than back at a wall. On a township block there is plenty of choice. On an estate lot there is less, so the fence detail and the exact position within the path matter more.

Grassfire country and how equipment is protected

That is a genuine reason to think harder about outdoor equipment and cable protection here than in a built-up suburb, particularly on the properties out toward the edge of the township where grass runs up to the boundary.

For a hot water changeover that means cable in conduit rather than exposed where a run leaves the building, mechanical protection on anything at low level, and sensible clearance around the unit rather than long grass growing against the intake face. None of it is expensive at installation. All of it is sensible on a plain that burns.

The flat treeless plain means almost no shading, so Lara solar generally performs at or above the Geelong average and a lot of houses here already have panels. That makes a heat pump the single best load to put under them, because hot water is small and completely shiftable.

Set the heating cycle to run in the early afternoon and the tank fills on generation that would otherwise export for a few cents, while the compressor runs in the warmest air of the day when it is most efficient. Against a conventional electric storage tank a heat pump uses roughly one third of the electricity for the same hot water, so the saving exists regardless. The timer is what turns part of that saving into no cost at all.

We still book work in scheduled blocks and nominate the week rather than the hour, because that is what we can reliably deliver, and we do not offer same-day attendance or emergency response anywhere in Geelong.

Solar Homes contributes up to $1,000, or up to $1,400 for a locally made product, under a $150,000 combined household income cap from 1 July 2026.
