Broad floorplans, big blocks and workshops worth conditioning

Split System Installation in Sunshine North

Sunshine North is a settled post war suburb of family homes on large blocks with sheds, workshops and long rear yards. The floorplans are broad and single storey, the roof space is generally accessible, and the original wiring and boards are mostly untouched.

The short answer

Split system air conditioning in Sunshine North costs $2,500 to $7,500 installed. Broad single storey post war floorplans on large blocks make ducted a realistic option here, but the more common job is a large living head plus bedroom heads, because most of these houses are only used in two or three rooms. Sheds and workshops are frequently part of the brief and need volume based sizing. Reverse cycle heats a room for roughly 28 to 36 cents an hour.

That combination makes both ducted and splits genuinely viable, which is not true everywhere we work. It also means the shed comes up in conversation more often here than anywhere except Werribee, because plenty of people want their workshop usable in February and July.

Splits, ducted, or a sensible mixture

Broad flat floorplans with accessible roof space are natural ducted candidates, and if you want even temperatures throughout from a single controller, that is the better product. It costs more up front and when the outdoor unit fails, the whole house loses heating and cooling at once.

The practical alternative in most Sunshine North homes is one large head in the main living area plus heads in the two or three bedrooms actually used. It costs a fraction of ducted, it lets you heat a single bedroom overnight for a few cents an hour, and each system fails independently. In a four bedroom house where two bedrooms are rarely occupied, that is the better value answer.

  • Choose ducted

Whole house use, occupants on different schedules, roof space available, and a preference for one controller and no wall units.

  • Choose splits

Life happens in two or three rooms, budget matters, and independent control and independent failure per room are worth having.

  • Add the shed later

A workshop split is a separate system anyway, so it can be staged without affecting the house design.

Original construction and what it does to sizing

Post war Sunshine North homes typically have 2.4 metre ceilings, brick or weatherboard walls with no insulation, and ceiling batts that are either original, compressed, or absent above a later extension. Room volumes are modest but the envelope leaks in both directions.

We check the roof space before sizing. Restoring ceiling insulation here is the cheapest capacity available and can drop a living room a full step, from 7.1kW to 5.0kW. It also improves comfort in rooms where you never install anything, which no air conditioner can do. Where a wall has been removed to open the lounge into the kitchen, we size for the combined volume rather than the original room.

Sheds and workshops, honestly assessed

A colorbond shed with an uninsulated roof, a roller door and a concrete slab is one of the hardest spaces to condition. In summer the roof radiates heat directly into the space and in winter it loses it just as fast. An undersized unit will run flat out all day and never reach setpoint, then fail early from the workload.

We size sheds on volume and construction and we tell you plainly what is needed. In many cases the better first spend is insulating the roof and sealing the big gaps, because that can halve the required capacity. Where a shed is used for a few hours at a time rather than all day, a larger unit run intermittently is often the more sensible design.

Circuits, boards and the VEU discount

Original switchboards and original wiring are the norm rather than the exception in the un-renovated Sunshine North stock. Every indoor head needs its own dedicated circuit and isolator, and a shed system needs a submain capable of carrying it, which many informally wired sheds here are not.

Board work is quoted separately from the air conditioning so the split is obvious. On cost, a split system is $2,500 to $7,500 installed. Victorian Energy Upgrades discounts are applied directly to the invoice, no income test, property at least two years old, $200 including GST minimum customer contribution, with amounts confirmed at quote because the program changed on 30 September 2026.

Refrigerant work is carried out under ARC licence and the electrical connection under REC 37223, with a Certificate of Electrical Safety issued on completion. That paperwork is what manufacturers ask for when a compressor fails in year four, so keep it with your house records along with the commissioning details. On the ground

Sunshine North specifics

  • Broad single storey floorplans with accessible roof space make ducted genuinely viable here, but most households only use two or three rooms, which is why splits usually represent better value.
  • Original ceiling insulation is compressed, patchy or missing above later extensions in most of this stock. Restoring it is the cheapest capacity available and often drops a living room a full step.
  • Sheds and workshops come up in the brief here more than almost anywhere. An uninsulated colorbond shed is a hostile thermal environment and insulating the roof first frequently halves the capacity needed.
  • Informally wired sheds are common on these blocks. A shed system needs a submain that can actually carry it, and many of the existing supplies cannot.

Sunshine North questions

It is a fair option here, given the broad floorplans and accessible roof space, and it gives even temperatures from one controller. But if your household lives in the living area and sleeps in two of the four bedrooms, one large living head plus two bedroom heads costs far less up front and every month, and each system fails independently rather than all at once.
