The short answer

Original boards are the norm, not the exception
In the un-renovated Sunshine North stock, original switchboards and original wiring are the norm rather than the exception. That means the starting point for a heat pump quote here is almost always a board assessment, because a rewireable or unprotected board cannot supply a compliant dedicated circuit.
We treat that as its own scope of work with its own price. A basic single phase upgrade from an old fuse box to a modern board with around eight circuits is generally completed within a day. On larger homes with sheds and workshop circuits it takes longer and it is worth doing properly, because on blocks like these there is usually more connected than the owner realises.
Getting off controlled load and onto daytime solar
Most of the old electric storage tanks here run on a controlled load tariff, heating overnight with an element. That arrangement made sense when off peak electricity was the cheapest thing available and there were no panels on the roof. It makes far less sense now.
Two things change with a heat pump. First, the appliance uses roughly a third of the electricity for the same hot water because it moves heat rather than making it. Second, moving the heating cycle to the early afternoon means the compressor runs in the warmest air of the day and, on a house with solar, consumes generation that would otherwise be exported for a few cents. Both are worth having, and the second one is just a timer setting.
Controlled load review
Worth checking with your retailer at changeover. A separately metered off peak circuit may no longer be the best arrangement.

Warmer air means better efficiency, and on a solar home it converts low value export into stored hot water.

The backup element may still assist on the coldest mornings. That is designed behaviour, not a fault.

Sheds, workshops and everything else on the block
Big blocks here mean shed power, workshop circuits and outdoor lighting are a regular part of the job. A lot of that was added over the years by various hands, and when we open a board to add a hot water circuit we frequently find sub-circuits feeding buildings nobody mentioned.
It is worth knowing about. Not because it needs fixing today, but because it affects how much capacity is genuinely available and whether the board upgrade should be sized for what exists rather than what is visible from the kitchen window.
Placement is genuinely easy here
Large post-war blocks with long rear yards give real freedom about where the unit stands. There is almost always a position with clear airflow on three or four sides, well away from bedroom windows on both sides of the fence. That is a luxury compared with the inner west.
The trade off is the same one as any big block: distance costs money. A position at the far end of the yard adds hot water pipe, adds waiting time at the tap and adds cable from the board. We usually recommend staying near the original tank position unless there is a good reason to move, and we price the alternative so the comparison is real.
Roof space that supports a full sized array
Broad single-storey tiled roofs with generous unshaded area are the norm in Sunshine North, and they support full sized solar systems in a way the inner west simply cannot. If the array is already there, the hot water timer is the easiest saving available. If it is not, the roof will take one.
We would rather sequence that properly. Board first if it needs doing, then hot water on a compliant circuit, then solar into a modern board. Doing it in that order avoids paying twice to terminate the same circuits.
