Three housing types, three different sizing conversations
Split System Installation in Werribee
Werribee is three jobs in one suburb. The established town centre around Watton Street with period and post war homes, the ring of fast growing estates, and the semi rural land out toward Werribee South. A split system quote that works for one of them is wrong for the other two.

The short answer
Split system air conditioning in Werribee costs $2,500 to $7,500 installed. Werribee covers three very different housing types: uninsulated period and post war homes in the town centre that need more capacity than their size suggests, modern estate homes that need less, and semi rural properties toward Werribee South with high volume rooms and outbuildings. Inland summers here run hotter than bayside Altona. Reverse cycle heats a room for roughly 28 to 36 cents an hour against 50 to 72 cents for ducted gas.

One thing they share is climate. Werribee is inland enough that summer afternoons run a couple of degrees hotter than the bayside suburbs, and there is no sea breeze arriving at four in the afternoon to take the edge off. That shows up in how hard a system has to work on the worst days of the year.
Town centre homes: uninsulated and thirsty
Period and post war homes around the Werribee town centre commonly have little or no wall insulation, tired or absent ceiling batts, and single glazed windows. They lose heat quickly in winter and gain it quickly in summer, so the same room needs materially more capacity than it would in an estate house four kilometres away.
Before we size anything, we look in the roof space. Restoring ceiling insulation in one of these houses is usually the cheapest capacity available and it can drop a living room from 7.1kW to 5.0kW. That saves on equipment, on running cost and on how hard the system has to work through a run of hot days.
Estate homes: better built, bigger volumes
The newer Werribee estates are built to modern insulation standards, which cuts the heat load per square metre. What they add back is volume and glass. Open plan living areas, 2.55 metre or higher ground floor ceilings, and large sliding doors that in many cases face west onto a rear yard with no mature shading.
Sizing here is a volume and glazing calculation rather than an insulation one. A well insulated open plan living, dining and kitchen area in a Werribee estate home commonly lands at 7.1 or 8.0kW, and it needs a head position that will actually push air across the whole space rather than into a kitchen island two metres away.
Head placement
On the long wall, throwing down the length of the open plan space rather than across it into a bulkhead or a kitchen return.
West facing glass
The dominant summer heat load in most estate living areas. External shading reduces the required capacity more than any other change.
Splits or ducted
Big single storey estate plans suit ducted well. Splits still win where the household lives in one space and sleeps in the others.
Acreage and Werribee South: volume and outbuildings
Out toward Werribee South the properties change again. Larger homes, higher ceilings, sometimes a converted or extended structure with a raked ceiling and no insulation at all, plus sheds and workshops that people increasingly want conditioned for year round use.
These are volume calculations first. A shed or workshop with an uninsulated colorbond roof, a roller door and a concrete floor is a brutal thermal environment and it will defeat an undersized unit completely. We are honest about that. Insulating the shed roof before installing changes the required capacity dramatically and is usually the better first spend.
Cost, the VEU discount and licensing
Installed cost runs $2,500 to $7,500 depending on capacity and head count, with extra for long pipe runs, upper floor heads and difficult access. Reverse cycle returns 3 to 4 units of heat per unit of electricity where gas converts only 80 to 92 percent of its fuel, which is why the running cost gap exists.
Victorian Energy Upgrades discounts are applied directly to the installation invoice. There is no income test, the property must be at least two years old, and there is a $200 including GST minimum customer contribution. The program changed on 30 September 2026 so we confirm the current amount in writing at quote. Refrigerant work is under ARC licence and the electrical connection under REC 37223.
Every split gets its own dedicated circuit and isolator, and in the older Werribee town centre stock the board frequently has to be brought up to standard before that circuit can be added. That is quoted as a separate line so you can see which part is the air conditioner and which part is the house catching up.

Werribee specifics
- Werribee sits far enough inland that summer afternoons run hotter than the bayside suburbs and there is no reliable late afternoon sea breeze. Systems here work harder on the worst days than the same system in Altona.
- Town centre homes are frequently uninsulated and need more capacity than their size suggests. Restoring ceiling insulation first often drops a living room a full capacity step.
- Estate homes are the opposite case: good insulation but large volumes and big west facing glazing, so the calculation is driven by glass and ceiling height rather than construction.
- Sheds and workshops toward Werribee South are a genuinely hostile thermal environment. Insulating the roof before installing changes the required capacity dramatically and is usually the better first spend.

Werribee questions
Yes, noticeably. Werribee is far enough inland that summer afternoons run a couple of degrees warmer than Altona or Williamstown, and it does not reliably get the late afternoon sea breeze that takes the edge off closer to the bay. It does not change how we size a room in principle, but it does mean the system spends more hours at high output.
Yes, but be realistic about it first. An uninsulated colorbond shed with a roller door and a concrete floor is a brutal thermal environment, and an undersized unit will simply run flat out and never get there. Insulating the roof and sealing the big gaps changes the required capacity dramatically. We will quote the shed as it is and as it could be, so you can compare.
It means the room needs more capacity than a chart would suggest, sometimes a full step more. Uninsulated walls and single glazed windows lose heat quickly in winter and gain it quickly in summer. Before sizing we check the ceiling, because restoring ceiling batts is the cheapest capacity available and can drop a living room from 7.1kW to 5.0kW.
Broad single storey estate plans suit ducted well and it gives you even temperatures from one controller. Splits still make sense where the household lives in the open plan area and only sleeps in the bedrooms, because one large living head plus two bedroom heads costs far less and heats a single room very cheaply. We price both and explain the trade off.
No. Werribee is around seventeen kilometres from our Altona workshop and it is a regular working area alongside Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook. Site visits are scheduled rather than same day at that distance, which suits this suburb anyway because an accurate assessment of insulation, glazing and volume is what makes the quote reliable.
