The short answer

Split system air conditioning in Point Cook costs $2,500 to $7,500 installed. Most homes here are double storey estate builds from the early 2000s onward, and the usual job is retrofitting upstairs bedroom heads where a single ground floor ducted system never quite reaches. Modern insulation keeps capacities lower than in older suburbs, but west facing upper floor glazing drives them back up. What they were not always built with is a heating and cooling system that handles the upper floor properly. The most common enquiry we get in Point Cook is not a whole new system, it is bedroom heads upstairs where the existing ducted system runs out of puff by nine at night in January.

The upstairs problem, and how splits solve it

Heat rises, upstairs bedrooms sit directly under a roof that has been in the sun all day, and a single ducted system with the return air downstairs struggles to hold the upper floor at setpoint on a hot evening. That is not a fault, it is a design limitation, and it is extremely common in Point Cook.

Individual splits in the upstairs bedrooms solve it cheaply and precisely. You get independent control per room, you can cool one bedroom for a child without running the whole system, and each head costs a fraction of re-engineering the ducted layout. Modern insulation cuts the numbers, glazing puts them back

Estate homes built from 2003 onward have insulated cavity walls, insulated ceilings and often sarking under the roof. That genuinely reduces the heat load, and it is why a Point Cook bedroom frequently takes 2.5kW where the same room in an Altona weatherboard would want 3.5kW.

The offsetting factor is glass. Modern estate homes have large window and sliding door areas, often single glazed, and the tight setbacks mean neighbouring houses provide no shading. A west facing upper floor bedroom with two metres of glass will still need 3.5kW despite good insulation. We measure the glazing and its orientation rather than assuming the insulation carries the room.

Where the outdoor units go on a tight estate block

Point Cook estate lots have narrow side setbacks and limited eaves, and the meter box, the hot water unit and the existing ducted condenser are frequently already using the good positions. Adding two or three more outdoor units for upstairs splits means finding space with proper airflow clearance and service access.

Wall brackets at first floor level are one answer for upstairs heads, and they keep pipe runs short, but they need a solid fixing and they put a running compressor closer to a bedroom window, sometimes a neighbour bedroom window. Ground level is quieter and easier to service. A multi head system serving several upstairs rooms from one condenser is often the tidiest solution on a tight lot.

Coastal exposure, electrical capacity and the VEU discount

Point Cook sits on the bay, and homes toward Sanctuary Lakes and the Cheetham Wetlands take real salt exposure. We specify corrosion protected coils and stainless or galvanised brackets on that side of the suburb. Inland toward Featherbrook the exposure is milder and standard hardware is generally fine.

On the electrical side, Point Cook boards are modern and compliant so the question is spare capacity, not safety. A home already running ducted, electric cooking, electric hot water and an EV charger may need its maximum demand assessed before more circuits go in.
