Solve the access before you solve the electrics
EV Charger Installation in Geelong West
Geelong West is late Victorian timber cottages, Edwardian double-fronters and 1920s bungalows on tight inner lots. Frontages are 9 to 12 metres and a lot of the housing sits on one or both boundaries, which means the side path most electricians assume exists simply is not there.

- Powercor network
- REC 37223
The short answer
EV charger installation in Geelong West 3218 costs $1,200 to $2,200 on single phase, and the variable here is access rather than distance. Inner lots run 250 to 450 square metres on 9 to 12 metre frontages, with many cottages built to one or both boundaries, so side access is often under a metre or absent entirely and the cable has to go through the roof space or around the front. Powercor is the distributor and the streets are single phase.

That makes this the suburb where we most often have to solve access before we solve anything electrical. A cottage built to both boundaries is a genuinely different quote to a house with a driveway, and it is why we would rather look at the property than price it from a photo.
No side access, so the run goes through the roof
Where there is no gap between the wall and the boundary, a charger circuit cannot simply run down the outside of the house. The route becomes the roof space, across from the meter position to wherever the car parks, and then down an internal wall cavity or through an eave. It works, but it takes longer and it costs more than a straight external run.
The other option on a double-fronted cottage is around the front, which is quick but visible. We show you exactly where surface conduit would sit before you agree to it, because on a Victorian frontage that is a decision people care about.
Roof space route
The usual answer here. Slower than an external run and priced for the time, not for the metres.
Around the front
Fast and cheap, but visible on a period frontage. We mark the exact line before we drill anything.
Original framing checked
Victorian cottage rafters are often undersized by modern standards, so anything fixed to them gets looked at rather than assumed.
If the car parks on the street, be honest about it
Plenty of Geelong West cottages have no off-street parking at all. Nothing can legally or safely run from a house across a footpath to a car at the kerb, and no compliant installation exists for that arrangement. We say this at the enquiry rather than booking a site visit that ends in the same answer.
Where there is a rear laneway, a hardstand or a single garage at the back of the block, a fixed charger is straightforward once the cable route is worked out. Those are the Geelong West properties worth quoting, and the difference between the two situations is usually obvious from the title boundary.
Kerbside parking
No compliant fixed charger exists for it. Public charging or a workplace charger is the realistic answer.
Rear laneway access
Often the cheapest route in this suburb, because the run leaves the back of the house rather than crossing it.
Single rear garage
Priced as a submain per metre. Overhead along a fence line beats underground where the property allows it.
Cottage boards and consumer mains
The housing here spans late Victorian through to 1980s renovation, so the board could be anything. What we see most is a board that was upgraded once in the eighties or nineties, has breakers but few spare ways, and sits at the end of consumer mains that were sized for a much smaller house than the one that exists now after two extensions.
A charger draws 32A continuously, which is a different thing to a kettle. Where the board takes it, the job is simple. Where it does not, replacement runs $800 to $3,500 depending on whether the meter panel and the mains need attention as well, and we quote that separately so the two costs are visible.
Spare ways first
A board with room and residual current protection takes a charger circuit straight up.
Consumer mains
Often the real limit on an extended cottage. A modern board fed by undersized mains still cannot carry the load.
Board replacement
$800 to $3,500 depending on scope, quoted as its own line rather than buried in the charger price.
Single phase, 32A and what that actually covers
Geelong West residential streets are single phase on the Powercor network. The practical ceiling is 32A, about 7.4kW, which adds roughly 40 to 50km of range per hour. On a tight inner block where the car does short local trips most days, that is finished technology rather than a compromise.
For a household running the drive to Melbourne several days a week, it still works. A long round trip is recovered in a few hours overnight on an off peak schedule. Converting to three phase for faster charging is not worth doing in this suburb, particularly given the access problems that would come with new consumer mains.
7.4kW ceiling
40 to 50km of range per hour, which fills any car overnight from a quarter charge.
Off peak scheduling
Set at commissioning so the car charges in the cheapest window without anyone managing it.
Phase conversion
Rarely justified here, and the new mains would face the same access problem as the charger circuit.
Bay salt, mounting position and the paperwork
Geelong West sits about a kilometre from Corio Bay, so there is sheltered-bay salt exposure. It is milder than the surf coast but it is enough to matter for the fixings, gland plates and the isolator next to the unit, which corrode long before a sealed charger does. We use stainless fixings as standard rather than the plated screws in the box.
Every charger installation is prescribed electrical work with its own final subcircuit, a breaker sized for continuous load and RCD protection suited to DC leakage under AS/NZS 3000. Powercor is told about the load addition through the connection process. We issue the Certificate of Electrical Safety under REC 37223.
Under an eave where possible
A sheltered position adds years to the fixings and the isolator at no extra cost.
Stainless as standard
A few dollars on the day, and the reason the mounting is still solid in year eight this close to the bay.
Certificate of Electrical Safety
Issued under REC 37223 with commissioning details and a 12 month workmanship guarantee.

Geelong West specifics
- Lots run 250 to 450 square metres on 9 to 12 metre frontages, and many cottages are built to one or both boundaries. Side access is often under a metre or absent, which changes both the price and the time on site.
- Where there is no side access, a charger circuit goes through the roof space or around the front. Both work, but they are different jobs to a run down a driveway and they are priced differently.
- Original timber framing on Victorian cottages is often undersized by modern standards, so anything fixed into the roof structure gets checked rather than assumed.
- About a kilometre from Corio Bay, so there is sheltered-bay salt exposure. Milder than Torquay or Ocean Grove, but enough that stainless fixings and coastal rated glands are worth having.

Geelong West questions
Yes, provided you have somewhere off-street to park. The circuit runs through the roof space rather than down an outside wall, which takes longer and costs more but is entirely normal here. If the only parking is at the kerb, there is no compliant fixed charger for that and we will tell you at the enquiry.
Access. A Grovedale block is 600 to 750 square metres with a gate wide enough to run cable to the rear, so the route is simple. A Geelong West cottage on 300 square metres with no side path needs the cable taken through the roof space. Same charger, same board work, different labour, and that is the whole difference.
We can, and it is the fastest route on a double-fronted cottage. The trade-off is that surface conduit is visible on a period frontage, which most owners here care about. We mark the exact line at the site visit so you can see it before agreeing. Where that is not acceptable, the roof space route is the alternative.
Not the sealed unit itself, which is rated for outdoor use. What corrodes is the fixings, the gland plates and the isolator mounted beside it. Geelong West is about a kilometre from Corio Bay, so we use stainless fixings and coastal rated glands and mount under an eave wherever the position allows it. It costs almost nothing and it doubles the service life.
No. Geelong West streets are single phase Powercor supply and the ceiling is 32A, about 7.4kW, giving 40 to 50km of range per hour. A conversion means distributor work and new consumer mains, which on a cottage with no side access is a serious job in itself. The money is far better spent on the board and the cable route.
Always, in this suburb. Geelong West is the one place in the region where we genuinely cannot price a charger from a photo, because the access varies house by house on the same street. We work it from Altona, about 60km, in scheduled blocks, so we nominate a week for the site visit rather than promising a day.
