The short answer

That makes this one of the easier suburbs in the region to install a charger in. The blocks are wide, the side access is real, and the wiring is modern enough to build on. The constraint is usually spare ways at the board, not the cable in the wall.

Spare ways are the thing that stops a Grovedale job

The 1970s and 80s boards that dominate here are perfectly serviceable. They have breakers, they often have residual current protection on the newer circuits, and there is nothing dangerous about them. What they frequently do not have is a spare way, because forty years of added circuits have filled the enclosure.

A charger needs its own final subcircuit, so it needs a way. Where the board is full, a sub-board in the garage fed from the main board is often cheaper than replacing the main board outright, and it puts the protection right next to the charger. Where the main board genuinely needs replacing, that runs $800 to $3,500.

Wide blocks make the cable run cheap

The 1970s and 80s streets here are 600 to 750 square metres on 16 to 20 metre frontages, and most have a gate wide enough to take a cable run to the rear. That is worth knowing before you compare quotes, because the same charger in Geelong West costs more purely because there is no way to get the cable to the back of the house.

The 1990s pockets tighten toward 450 to 550 square metres and the access narrows with them, but even there it is usually better than the inner suburbs. Where the garage is detached at the rear, the run is priced per metre and overhead along a fence line beats underground where the property allows.

Single phase, capacity and load management

A 1980s four bedroom brick veneer that has since gained ducted reverse cycle and an electric oven is carrying more than its original design assumed, and a 32A continuous load on top of that is worth calculating rather than guessing.

Where the maximum demand is tight, a load management device at $200 to $600 throttles the charger when the house draws hard instead of tripping the main switch. That is almost always the right answer here, because a phase conversion on a suburban Grovedale block costs many times more and delivers nothing for a car that sits at home overnight.

The Surf Coast Highway grid and solar charging

The charger takes its own final subcircuit back to the board, cable sized for continuous rather than occasional load, a correctly rated breaker and RCD protection suited to DC leakage under AS/NZS 3000. It cannot share a circuit with power points.
