Highton was rural until the mid 1950s and has been building ever since, so the housing runs from 1960s brick veneer through to new work on the north west edge. The build year tells you more about the switchboard here than anywhere else in Geelong.

The short answer
Highton 3216 sits high on the Barrabool Hills, which makes it noticeably windier than the flat suburbs and changes where a condenser goes and how it is mounted. Homes on the escarpment have large west and north facing glazing over the Barwon valley, so living areas frequently need 7.1kW rather than 5.0kW. The stock runs from 1960s brick veneer to current building, so switchboard capacity tracks the build year. Powercor is the distributor.

Multi-head systems share one outdoor unit

The other local factor is the elevation. Sitting up on the Barrabool Hills means very little overshadowing and a lot more wind than the plain below, and wind is not neutral for an outdoor unit. It affects where the condenser goes, how it is fixed and how the system behaves on a cold morning.
Wind exposure and the condenser
A condenser exposed to a steady wind straight into its discharge face has to work harder to move air across the coil, and on an elevated Highton block the prevailing wind is not something you can ignore. Siting the unit so the discharge is not fighting the wind is free at design stage and impossible to fix afterwards.
Mounting matters too. A unit on a ground pad is stable regardless. A unit on a wall bracket at an exposed corner takes wind load through the fixings, so the bracket and the fixing into the wall get specified for the position rather than pulled off the van as standard.
Face it away
Discharge into the prevailing wind makes the fan work against itself. A quarter turn at design stage solves it.

Exposed corners take real wind load. The bracket and its fixings are chosen for the position, not by habit.
Winter defrost
A wind exposed coil frosts more readily on a cold damp morning, so a sheltered position genuinely helps in July.
Escarpment homes, glazing and room volume
The houses along the escarpment were built for the view, which means large areas of west and north facing glass over the Barwon valley and often a raked or cathedral ceiling in the living area. Both push the capacity up, and both are invisible in a floor area calculation.
A living and dining area of 40 square metres with a flat 2.4 metre ceiling and modest windows is a 5.0kW room. The same footprint with a raked ceiling and four metres of west facing glass is 7.1kW or more. We measure the glass and the ceiling before putting a number on it.

The switchboard tracks the build year
Sixty odd years of continuous building means the stock is genuinely mixed, and here the board age follows the build year more reliably than anywhere else in the region. A 1965 house on Barrabool Road and a 2018 house on the north west edge are two different electrical conversations.
Older boards frequently have no spare ways for the dedicated circuit each head needs, and homes on the escarpment often have long runs from the street to the meter position, which is the single biggest cost variable when supply work is involved.
1960s and 70s
Expect an original board, limited spare ways and an upgrade quoted as its own line at $800 to $3,500 or more.
1990s onward
Modern protection and usually spare capacity, so the circuit at $350 to $800 is generally the whole electrical scope.
Long service runs
Escarpment blocks can put a long distance between the street and the meter, which shows up in any supply work.
Single head or multi head on a Highton block
The 1960s to 1980s blocks have real side access, so there is room for more than one outdoor unit and single head systems stay on the table. That is worth using, because singles run at their best efficiency per room and one failure does not cost you the whole house.
The newer north west subdivisions are different. Garages run to the boundary, the side path narrows, and a single viable condenser position pushes those homes toward a multi head. That is a fair answer there and an unnecessary compromise on an older block.
Older streets
Generous side access means separate systems per room, which is usually the better long term answer.
New subdivisions
Garage to boundary leaves one narrow path, so a multi head from one outdoor unit is often the practical solution.
Failure mode
A single head failure costs one room. A multi head failure costs every room on that outdoor unit.
Gas replacement, cost and how we schedule
A lot of Highton homes run ducted gas installed in the 1980s or 90s and now due for replacement. Reverse cycle returns 3 to 4 units of heat per unit of electricity against 80 to 92 percent conversion for gas, which is roughly 28 to 36 cents an hour against 50 to 72 cents, or about $200 to $450 a year.
Victorian Energy Upgrades discounts apply to the invoice directly, no income test, property at least two years old, $200 including GST minimum contribution, and the program changed on 30 September 2026.
